Join us at noon on February 24th for an online artist talk and interactive event with Jaspal Birdi! You will learn more about her experience in the RBC Artist Incubator Lab and her solo exhibition Can I Play Outside?, which will reopen in Gallery A when it is safe to do so. You’ll also get the chance to participate in a series of artist-led drawing activities on Google Jamboard.

In this workshop, Jaspal will demonstrate the tools and capabilities of the Jamboard platform and explore creative image-making techniques. She will guide you through collaborative exercises that allow you to add your own layers of meaning and memories to images from her exhibition. Along with other participants, you will negotiate the shared space and connect through collective action and miscommunication.

What is a Google Jamboard?

Google Jamboard is an interactive whiteboard system. Like a digital sketch pad, it allows users to collaborate on / co-author a drawing in real time.

In Jaspal’s exhibition, a Jamboard screen is projected onto a large-scale mural of Lake Ontario. By scanning a QR code, visitors can access the Jamboard and draw right on top of the artwork. If you want to check it out in person, you’ll be able to work on the image with someone else, add to what’s already there, or start fresh to create your own worlds.

Please note: To participate in the drawing activities on Google Jamboard during the workshop, you will need to have a Google account. If you do not have a Google account, you can still attend the workshop as a viewer. More details about how to participate will follow, after you register for the event.

If you have any questions, please contact Hannah Keating at [email protected].

The RBC Emerging Artist Residency Program is generously sponsored by the RBC Foundation and the RBC Emerging Artist Project.

The artist also thanks the Ontario Arts Council for their support of an ongoing project – a work from that project will be featured in this virtual event.
