with Jaspal Birdi

January 20, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

This is event has been postponed until further notice due to the RMG being temporarily closed. We will update the date and time of this event as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

This event is presented alongside Jaspal Birdi’s solo exhibition: Can I Play Outside?

On view in Gallery A from December 18, 2020 – January 31, 2021

Join us for some lunchtime fun from the comfort of your home, office, studio, or classroom for this virtual artist talk and participatory drawing event with Jaspal Birdi!

Over the past three months, Jaspal was in residence with us in the RBC Artist Incubator Lab, working on new works for her solo exhibition in Gallery A. Her show is now open and she is excited to invite audiences to add their own memories and interpretations to one of the works on display.

In the gallery, a Google Jamboard has been projected onto the artist’s large-scale mural of Lake Ontario. The Jamboard screen looks like a page from a giant sketchbook and it allows people to collaborate on a digital drawing. Visitors to the gallery are invited to scan a QR code to access the Jamboard, then watch in real time as they draw on top of Jaspal’s artwork. They can work on an image with someone else, add to what’s already there, or start fresh to create their own worlds.

For at-home audiences, we invite you to join us on Wednesday, January 20 to take part through a live-streamed event. Jaspal will be onsite in the gallery and will provide an introduction to her residency and art practice in a short talk. The talk will be followed by a guided drawing session where all participants will be invited to respond to a series of prompts and create new images together in real time. While you’re drawing, or watching the drawings take shape, Jaspal will also facilitate a Q and A to answer any questions you may have.

The RBC Emerging Artist Residency Program is generously sponsored by the RBC Foundation and the RBC Emerging Artist Project.
