Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder
Glamourgirl: I decided to do this piece about beauty within culture. Beauty magazines such as Covergirl have women who have fair skin, silky, luxurious hair and perfect skin. I wanted to create my own magazine: Glamourgirl. I then chose a woman with a darker complexion with dreads to portray beauty with skin and culture, implying everyone is beautiful. I substituted the description box where magazines would list the description of their makeup product and put a quote by Maya Angelou. I used the layout of a regular Covergirl magazine and added a twist!
Brains Behind the Take Off: I chose to do this portrait on beauty within knowledge, inspired by the American mathematician Katherine Johnson. I chose to have space as the background of her portrait because she was a NASA employee whose calculations of orbital mechanics were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed flights to space.
Timeless: I was inspired by Andy Warhol’s pop art. This work is inspired by beauty within age. Although we may not be familiar with the woman, she displays beauty with the wrinkles on her face and her knowledge over the years. I chose red, blue and green to give the audience a different display of emotions. Andy Warhol also used many different colours in his works.
