The Seniors Art Competition and Exhibition is a showcase of creativity and technical skill among members of the Oshawa Senior Community Centres, Oshawa Public Libraries, and The Robert McLaughlin Gallery.
Featuring paintings, drawings, sculpture, and more, this annual community exhibition is structured around a competition theme and prizes are awarded in three categories: Novice, Hobby, and Open. This year, the theme is “that summer.”

In the NOVICE category…
The RUNNER UP is Florence Caie for her painting Barn on Selina Road, which the jury described as balanced, warm, and expressive.
The WINNER is Debbie Carter. The jury thought Debbie’s painting Sandhill Crane at Home was a skillful example of oil painting. They enjoyed the way the artist captured the reflection of light and created a real feeling of being in the marsh. Well-studied and fresh, the painting is a wonderful testament to a memorable moment.
In the HOBBY category…
The RUNNER UP is Robert Godden for his mixed media work Thunder Words. The jury loved the concept and the application of different techniques. It is a playful interpretation of the theme that really tells a story.
The WINNER is Dorothy Galpin. The jury thought Dorothy’s mixed media drawing, Carol’s Rhapsody, was very charming, noting that it conveys the familiar and nostalgic spirit of the theme. They remarked that Dorothy’s composition was not over-worked, that she created a wonderful sense of continuity and economy in her mark-making, and managed to capture fun details at the same time.
In the OPEN category…
The RUNNER UP is Alexander Ahilov for his painting Summer Music in the Park. The jury applauded the impressive technical ability of the artist. The colours and composition are so engaging and expressive, and it’s a wonderful portrait!
The WINNER is Laurie Cairns for her work My Girl, which the jury described as cinematic. The painting uses pattern and shading effectively to create real emotional depth. They shared they felt wistful looking at the image, drawn especially to the soft rendering of the faces and the heavy drapery of the clothing, which help to give the painting an impression of “times gone by.” For that reason, they thought it was a lovely interpretation of the theme.
